London radio presenter George Webley dies

Big George Webley

I didn’t know George personally but I used to tune in occasionally, sometimes when John Kennedy was on, in his regular spot Talk the walk, listen to a piece below.

George Webley, 53, better known as Big George, died in the early hours of Saturday after collapsing at his home in Milton Keynes.

“He was a truly distinctive broadcaster who will be terribly missed by his many devoted listeners and his colleagues.”

A true friend of the London taxi trade.

There is to be a farewell to Big George Webley on the steps of All Souls Church, Portland Place, to take place between 1:45am and 2;00am on Tuesday night/ Wednesday morning this week 11 May 2011.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this great moment of sadness.

  1. John Kennedy says:

He really was a great musical genius and I know people just loved his banter. He was a patriot and loved this city like no other. I’m gutted he is gone but his music and words will always live on. We all need to remember that we only get one chance at life and it is all to easy to lose friends and not stay in touch with people we love and care for.

Please do make every effort to turn up on Tuesday night Wednesday morning at All Souls Church, Portland Place W1 at 1.45am. Bring a light/candle or a torch and at 2am let’s have a minutes silence and turn the lights off (for hire too) in honour of a true friend to all London taxi-cab drivers.

God Bless Jo and all Big George’s family,

    John the Cabby.

PS I popped into “Cafe Italia” Soho last night they only saw him last week they couldn’t believe the sad news.

So sad to hear of Big George’s passing. I listened to him on the radio for many years. He was always full of energy and enthusiasm. Always caring, fair and full of humour. I’m shocked. All the best to his family friends and loved ones. He was known and loved by many
