TLC for Cabbies

Twitter iPhones and something else

Thank God August has passed. Now I can start earning some real money, he says  -  lol

Even though August was slow, I was still working the same long hours. The only difference is that in August,  there’s very little street work and very long queues at the train stations.  I normally put my hire light sign on when  I reach Old Street, and if I don’t get a job from there I then head straight to Kings Cross and join the back of the rank which is normally half way up Goods Way.

Mind ya, there’s one consolation when ranking up I don’t put as much fuel in my tank saving a few bob, that’s exactly what it is, only a few bob.

It being our kipper season, I would leave home maybe 4 or 5  pm instead of my usual 3  pm -  start, then add that time on at the end of my day, because you’ve always got a chance of making your money up in the early hours.

We’re now into September and it’s a lot cooler especially at night.

You should all know by now that I follow people on Twitter, mainly cab drivers.  I met up with a few of them a couple of weeks ago and they added a new Twitter account on my phone for me to follow, called tweet a london cab founded by London cabbie Karl James. If you follow them you can book a taxi, there are no hidden charges and the meter goes on when the driver arrives at the pick up point. If you have any queries  about the service you can always tweet a London cab and ask as many questions as you like. Excellent idea, well done Karl!

Just over a week ago there was a Twestival where around two hundred people turned up, Richard of Cabbies Capitalwas there trying to promote Tweet a London cab !  it was held at Vinopolis in Park Street,  South of the Thames. When it was all over Richard sent out a message on twitter for taxis to pick up punters, around  20 cabs turned up. I can see Tweet a London cab gaining strength over the coming years.

If you want to follow tweet a London cab, all you need is a mobile phone with mobile internet access. And for cab drivers wishing to join all you’ve got to do is Tweet a London cab and ask to join,  it’s that simple.

If you already have an iPhone here are a few useful apps.

National Rail Enquiries, app £4:99

As a cab driver working the streets of London this one is a must:  There  you can find out when the next train arrives from any station in the country, and for the punters it also has the feature to tell your next train home. It looks up your nearest station and checks the time of the next train to your destination. That gives you time to order that extra drink before hailing a cab that will take you to the station.

Google mobile, app free of charge

You can speak your queries instead of typing them, that way you don’t have to take your hand of the steering wheel. Mind you it’s probably best to pull over before trying this on your phone.

London jam cams, app free of charge

This one is great for planning ahead – it allows you to view the roads before you get to them, so you can divert before you get caught in a jam.

Echofon Pro, price tag at £2.99

The last one I’m going to mention in this blog is of course Twitter, I’m using two versions at the moment, which work slightly different. Formerly known as Twitterfon Pro,  and one of the things I like about this version is that you can view all your accounts in one window instead of changing – you’ll see what I mean when you install it.

The next one I like to use on Twitter is called Twittelator Pro, and for a fee of £2.99,  it’s a must, there are a lot of features for you to play around with.

I’ve only had my iPhone a short while and it’s keeping me busy! A couple of things I need to work on are contacts and photos, being I use Hotmail, I’m having a few problems exporting my contacts over to my i phone but I won’t be defeated! The second problem is syncing  photos from my computer to my iPhone, I’m sure with some spare time on my hands and the wife not nagging me about the time I spend on it, I’ll get over it!

To finish on Alexandra and myself went along to the Last Night of the Proms in Hyde Park (Proms in the Park), we had ourselfs a really good night out,  forty thousand people turned up, it was like one massive picnic in the park, a live show sitting on the ground, knocking back bottles of beer and wine, total bliss you couldn’t ask for more. I highly reccomend it! Just remember to take your own sarnies and drinks with you as it is quite expensive inside.

P.S  Our header at the top of this page has temporarily changed we will get back the old look as soon as possible.

Be lucky, Steve.

Steve, there is one more problem with your i phone and that is the fact that now when I talk to you on my way down the M1 the connection drops out constantly.
It’s great having all the “apps” etc but you would think that they could get the basics right first, after all it is suposed to be a bloody phone not a status symbol.
I shall try to call you when I come to work tonight but I won’t hold my breath!
    Cheers Del Boy
